There are basically 2 measures of a blog’s popularity. The 1st is through citations, the 2nd is through affiliation (i.e. blogroll). While it takes some time for a blog to become popular through a blog roll, permalinks boost popularity much more quickly, and are better indicators of a blog’s true popularity and authority than blogrolls because they denote that visitors are actually reading the blog's content and therefore deem it valuable or at least important.

This practice has revolutionised the blogosphere in almost the same way that the Google AdSense Program did.
