› Blogs & Employment
Losing one's job because of what one writes on one’s personal blog referencing the place of employment has become so common that there is now a slang term for it: “dooced”, which originates from the pseudonym of Heather Armstrong, who was fired after writing satirical accounts of her place of employment on her personal blog web page.
The argument is that employees who blog about elements of their place of employment can begin to negatively affect the brand recognition of their employer. For example, tenured senior lecturer at the London School of Economics Erik Ringmar was ordered by the head of his department to remove defamatory material regarding the quality of education at the school from his blog in the spring of 2006.
On the other hand some bloggers point out that a large portion of the blogger community are professionals, and a well-written free blog pages can actually help attract employers.
